I tried the 12x optical combined with the 5x digital to see what I would get.

This powerline is about 300 yards from my backyard. I just rested my elbows on the
patio table and give it a go. I could definately get better results using a tripod.

Should be able to get some decent shots at the girls soccers games this year.

Pretty good with that much digizoom! The quality does dimenish this way, but quite often it's worth it because you couldn't get any closer!

I ditto da Dawg.

But it's worth taking a secondpic without digi-zoom to see if a simple crop doesn't look better.

I have a lot of experimenting to do. This was my first effort at long range.

I want to set up my tripod and shoot a few more of the same subject with different settings on the focal length.

Thanks for the comments

Not bad! I love using Digi-zoom just for fun (for important shots I never use more than maybe 0.5 digizoom). And you have 5x, my P850 only has 3.3. Although you really need to get a Tcon for that P712! Now that would be ZOOOOM!

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a tcon? Who makes it. Where does one go for information on it.

Thank you

Thank you
A TCON is a teleconverter. A teleconverter gives you more zoom dependind on which one you get. To use a teleconverter on the P712 you need the Kodak Lens Adapter for The p850,p712. The most popular teleconverter(TCON)is the Olympus TCON 17..... You can buy both the Lens Adapter and the olympus tcon17 from http://www.bhphotovideo.comand they are a reliable dealer.

The Olympus TCON 17 is 55mm and 1.7X Magnification. The regular P712 is 36mm to 432mm with a 35mm equivalent. With the TCON it will give you: 734.4 mm, which is a lot with a 35mm eqivalent.

There are also other ones like the Kodak 1.4X Teleconverter. The Olympus TCON 17 is more popular in this forum, but I've never actually used it. With the Kodak 1.4X TCON it will give you: 604.8mm, which is quite a ways back from the Olympus TCON. Don't get me wrong the Kodak TCON is great, it's just that the Olympus will give you more zoom.

The TCON works great for me with moon photography and a little bit of digital zoom. It also works great for sporting events for example Football. I photograph that all the time.:-) You can go here: http://www.stevesforums.com/forums/v...mp;forum_id=18tosee some night football shots, taken at ISO 250-400. Or you can go here to see some day football shots: http://www.stevesforums.com/forums/v...mp;forum_id=18. All taken with the Olympus Tcon 17, of course:-).

Last thing, there is some vingetting until you get to 4-6X Optical Zoom. This happens with all TCON's.

Your best bet would probably be the Olympus TCON, just because it has more magnification and it's cheaper:-)...

LOL

Tell me if this helps?

Thank s-r, just the info I was looking for.
I knew that Kodak made the lens adapter and a 1.4 but was not aware of just what it does.

It is sugnificant the difference in the 1.4 of Kodaks and the 1.7 from Olympus. I will definately go with the 1.7

Flying Fossil Sep 6, 2006 11:20 PM

Had a look at the bhphoto site and see that they list several 1.7 tcons for the olympus in various models.
Which one/ones should I consider.
Also the lense adapter is for a p850 or p880. As I recall on the kodak site, the p880 and the 712 take the same adapter.

Thanks again for the info

I'm afraid I can't help you with the adapter, the Kodak site should have it listed though.

According to BHPhoto, the P880 adapter (and the P850 adapter), uses 55mm lenses, so you need the 55mm Oly Tcon!

Thats the link to the Tcon. I just got it in the mail on tuesday, excellent product! Although be warned it adds a significant amount of length/weight to your camera (in fact, when I'm shooting I know hold the camera with one hand supporting the lens and one hand on the shutter). Before I just had both hands on the camera body.

You'll want to make sure that the P880 adapter is right however, but if Kodak's website said so, thats probably right!
