I was just about to order my lense adapter for my 6490, and thought I'd go ahead and get a Circular Polarizer also in the same order to save shipping. I started looking in the shopping site I was in and saw the Kodak CP for approximately $65, and a combination Tiffen filter kit which contained a UV Haze filter and a CP for around $30. I was temped to buy the Tiffen set for TWO filters, when I had a second thought... How big a difference could the Kodak CP be for $65 versus the Tiffen SET of two filters for only $30. Is there a big quality difference I may need to be aware of? I mean shouldI stick to the 'name brand' (Kodak) or go for the Tiffen (which I thought was a good manufacturer of lenses and filters too)? I just don't want to be a victim of "you get what you pay for", nor do I want to foolishly pay over twice the price for half the filters. Any help or advice would GREATLY be appreciated.

IfI saw two identcal filters....one from kodak and one from tiffen, i'd lunge for the tiffen filter as they are among the highest quality filters out there. But this being a specific application filter just for this camera, i think i might opt for the kodak just for this reason.

Thanks for the reply MickeyBC,
I appreciate the info on the quality of Tiffen cause I've REALLY thought about getting them. I'm just trying to find out if there's something about the make/design of my 6490 that requires their (Kodak's) CP Filter. I did find out that the Kodak one is actually a 'B&W' Circular Polarizer, and they're supposed to be really good lenses also, but are they worth the significant price difference? Anyone? Thanks all who offer advice/info... Dave... |

BIG difference Dave,,,some say there is not,,,but i`m here to tell you there is such a big diff between makers it almost like cavalier to caddy...
Read this link,,,it will give you an idea of what i mean.......some of the filters are multi -coated,,both sides,,,not just one side on cheap window glass,,,Tiffen makes good filters,,,B+W makes pro quality filters,,,,not made from cheap glass,,,i wouldn`t throw away a tiffen or other make,,,but if you have the few extra bucks,,,and want results,,,B+W is the filter,,,i`ve been reading that DC`s actually suffer from flare and reflections more than an SLR,,,,the article i read said to get a really good ,,,double sided coated filter,,,,,,and you would have a lot better shots because of the multi-coating on both sides... Just my three cents worth,,, Brian http://www.schneideroptics.com/filte...Bw_difference/ |

Thank-you brianhare, I appreciate the info. I had a 6440 before I got my 6490. I was sold on this line of cameras because of their Schnieder lenses, but found with the 6440, that it was suseptible (sp) to flaring. I like taking long exposure-low light shots. I figured when I got the 6490 that it too may have instances of flaring just by merit of having a larger lense (I haven't had any yet though). Now, finding out the B&W lense is of the same quality as what I already was sold on does make the difference. Especially since I want to do more landscape and outdoor shots involving bright light. Thanks again for the info...
