It is just an observation. However, I have been watching the sharpness of the posted photos for a few days. It appears that the photos from the Z-7590 (5.0mp) are sharper than those from the P-850 (5.0mp), the P-880, the Z-612, the Z-740, and the P-712.

Here is the photo that our new member Rick67 posted in the thread called "Male African Lion." BTW, welcome Rick to our forum. Anyway there is a beautiful sharpness to that photo, and a very nice glint in the lion's eyes. Perhaps Rick used a bit of fill flash as well. Rick can you cofirm that?

Just to cross check I went and pulled out my Z-7590 and had my husband take a photo of me then with the Z-612 and then the Z-7590. To my eyes the Z-7590 was sharper. I thought a bit more about it and then realized that our DX-6490 used to exhibit that same photo sharpness. Here is that cross check photo taken with the Z-7590.

Isit just my older eyes? Or, has anyone else noticed the same thing??

Could be. Though, the P850 is supposed to have soft images. And, the P880 is supposed to have the best overall image quality. But, the Z7590 could certainly be sharper. Maybe the difference is in the in-camera sharpening? Or, if you're judging the P880's sharpness from my shot. Just to let you know, I do not do shapening after a resize. (As it may cause jaggie's.)

Looking forward to more comparison's!

Cheers.

I agree that it could very well be the amount of in camera sharpening that the Z-7590 actually does. I have owned and used a P-880 extensively, so I have lots of P-880 photos in the files, which I checked against before I began this thread.

MT, I thought it was generally accepted that the 7590 was sharper than all of the P series cameras. That's my biggest gripe about my P850. It's a great overall camera but it can't match many of it's competitors for absolute image sharpness. Even the $149 Nikon Coolpix cameras used in my office are sharper.

Again it may be the in camera sharpening, but the DX-6490, the Z-7590, and even the V-550 and the Z-760turn out very sharp photos. Sharper in fact that the P-850 or the P-880, which I owned and then sold. The P-712 seem to be a bit sharper than the P-850, it replaced.

That is a shame because you would think that the Performance cameras would be somehat sharper. Perhaps, Ron Baird, can shed some light on this small quirk.

The first photo is taken with a Z-760 and the second photo was taken with the V-550.

Pixels per sensor size should be a factor. It has seemed to me that older (fewer pixel) cameras will in some cases yield better pics than newer (greater pixel) cameras. I've read similar comments from others.

My Z700 (4 megapixel) camera has at times seemed an overachiever. If Ron Baird is feeling ambitious then he can have them make me a Z700 with the C875 sensor. :-)

M/T

Your second image with the V550 looks a bit sharper in the eye brows.

I ahve noticed that on my P880 when shooting under the fine mode i get higher quality enlargements but when shooting snap shop size photos the regular or lower modes seem as nice or better in sharpness.
