The fiesta actually begins on Friday, but all the balloonists are out at around 7:30 a.m. when the wind currents are the most favorable. No reported accidents yet (that I know of). They take off ("ascend") from the ballon field near the Rio Grande... drift eastward towards the Sandia Mountain range, then catch a westward current that takes them to my neighborhood way out west. Flying a balloon seems to be like being in a sailboat with no steering mechanism.

At one of the balloon rallies in NJ I was talking to a "Balloonatic" who teld me how whileclimbing into the basket in NM his balloonwas caught by a draft and he was dragged accross a patch of barrel cacti.

Hmmm... I believe he got dragged... it happens all the time. But I don't know about the barrel cactus unless he was somewhere else besides the official city balloon field. The balloon pilots are running out of wide open space to land. All the wide open spaces are now becoming residential subdivisions.

BTW... Here's a semi-technical explanation of the wind current phenomenon known as the "Albuquerque Box".
