Question: Do you always use your camera at full zoom when using your tele extender? If you use less than full zoom then does that allow you a wider aperture and/or faster shutter?

When I use the tcon, 90 % of the time, I am at full optical zoom !!

From 0 to around 2x of optical zoom, the widest- aperture I can use with the p850 is f2.8 !!

Then, from 2x to 12x the widest is f3.3 (I think)

So even if you zoom out to the hlaf, you won't get a difference !!

P.S. (by the way, I always use aperture priority to set the lowest apperture possible to the clearest pictute possible )

Boily and Domang..You can also set the lowest arperture in manual mode. Mine whether the TCON is attached or not will only allow a 3.7 at the furtherest zoom. At halfway or a little less I can get 3.2 then as boily said at about 2X you can achieve a 2.8 arperture. That's what my DX6490 will do anyway!

Oh yeah I use mine at full zoom with the TCON attached about 99% of the time!

Thanks to you both.

Here is why I asked: My Z612 goes out to 420mm. At 420mm the aperture narrows to 4.8 at its widest. That is a problem in less than good light. I might change that in aperture priority mode but I would then need a very slow shutter to allow in enough light. A tele extender would allow me to go to 420mm or greater at less than full zoom. At less than full zoom I can get more light with a wider aperture.

If the above is understandable then it explains why a tele extender might be good for more than just maximizing zoom.
