I recently just purchased a Z7112IS...so far I am very happy. But I keep getting "Memory card needs Formatted". Nver been a big deal until today. I took some pictures last night at my sons 3rd birthday and now I cannot get to them to download them.

1st question: Why do I keep getting this error?

2nd question: Is there still a way to retreive them?

Thanks, Marty

Marty-

It sounds like either there is a defect in the SD card, a rather rare occurrence. Or the card has not been formatted recently and there is a lot of accumulated digital garbage on the chip or card.

Firstly, try another SD card and see how the camera performs. If it is normal, then the problem was the original chip. And what about those 3rd Birthday photos? Well, my suggestion would be to use a Chip or Card Reader, which are inexpensive and allow you to insert the SD card and then read the photos directly from the SD card. That procedure would allow you to sort out the photos perhaps.

More than anything, I am guessing that you have a bad card or one that needs to be reformatted very badly.

I agree with Sarah. Try a card reader to retrieve those photos before anything else and the continue to use that card reader. Much quicker and safer that way.

Crazy-

If the Chip Reader did not do the trick, then you next option is to download a free recovery software program and try that. Go to www.google.com and type in "free photo recovery software."

Keep in mind that the SD chip/card could have also failed as you were taking the photos. That does not happen to brand name SD chips/cards, but it does happen with discounted/no name brand SD card/chips.

Marty-

The deeper we get into this, the more that Kodak SD chip becomes suspect. Has you used a different SD chip with your Z-712 camera? How has it worked. If the new SD chip/card has worked flawlessly, then the original Kodak SD chip/card may indeed be the problem in this ongoing mystery.
