Default July 4 '09 Sampler

Bettendorf, IA display. The EXIF data is attached but I used either f/7.1 or f/8, 6 or 8 sec. ISO 80 and manual focus.

Thank you both for the kind comments. There is more than a little luck involved in shooting fireworks but it's amazing how much bad advice is floating around about the subject. This year I did have several bystanders ask me which newpaper I was from and when I said I wasn't they asked if I was from a TV station. I guess even a Z612 is impressive when mounted on a Quick-Set Elevator Hi-Boy IV |:-)

How did you use the manual focus, A. C. ? By guessing a position on the 0-infinity scale, or by finding something brightly lit the right distance away? Any special hints?

I takes me ages to get manual focus right on my Z712 & Z1012, usually while attempting close-ups, but also when getting an autofocus lock proves difficult.

I used the manual scale to set at infinity. I was around 1/4 mi. (400m) away from the launch site. At that distance and f/8 that's in focus even at full telephoto.

I, as you, have been a bit frustrated attempting manual focus visually with the Z although I should have tried using it for some shots during my recent experiments with a light tent.
