does it look like a miniature world?

The "miniature" effect seems to be a unique Canon feature. Your photo does appear to provide some of that effect.

Looks like simply exremely shallow DOF, but it does make it look like a model

Yep, seems to have worked out. I love playing with this sort of photo. We had a bi-weekly challenge using the technique sometime last year and it gave some interesting results

To be done in the original way it is by using a tilt-shift lens so pretty much you would be looking at a Canon or Nikon dSLR but we are talking serious money for a tilt-shift lens.
