Default External flash for DX6490 needed,,,,or not ???

So,,,i`m going to post some flash pics....

I did this on dpreview too.....it`s to show the advantages of an external flash,,,for people looking and wondering if they need one..

The need WILL arise if you take large area photos,,,like in a large room,,,outdoor events, definately at weddings, etc,,,

The size, power, zoom, bounce adjustments,,,,are up to and depending on your real need..

If you want to do outdoor sports pics,,,and if flash is allowed in the first place,,,you`ll want to get a powerfull flash,,,there is one on e-bay i`ve seen that will go to 120 feet ! ! ! ! !

Bouce flash,,,if you get one with an adjustable head that will point up,,at various angles,,,you can fire the flash to the ceiling in a room,,,that will cut out unnecessary flash spots/reflections in shiny objects such as pictures on the wall,,shiny sofa fabrics, etc,,,,,,,makes a "softer" well lit room...

All the pics below were on full auto,,,,no PASM,,,

This first one I used only the onboard flash that is on the DC,,, no red eye..

In this shot I used only the external flash,,set at 6.6-30 feet,,,ISO was set at 400 on the flash,,,,again the DC was on full auto..

This last pic I used both,,,,the internal flash,,,,and the external flash,,,cam still on auto mode,,auto flash,no red eye on the cam,,,and the external flash still set to 6.6-30 feet,,,ISO 400..

http://img48.photobucket.com/albums/...e/100_0439.jpg

So,,,the second and third pic could have been improved by using PASM mode,,,because the camera thought on one pic that the internal flash was only being used,,and on the third photo the camera thought that no flash was being used,,,so it did not make any adjustments for the extra light from the external flash...

I`ve found setting the DC in PASM mode to 100 ISO,,,1/90 shutter speed really is good to start with,,,,i`m still trying to find time to experiment more,,,,but if this shows anything,,,it shows that an external flash is almost a needed item,,,and not an accessory...

The onboard flash is`nt enough in almost all DC cameras,,,thats why they put hotshoes and PC cord outlets there for external flashes,,,,if you go out in dim conditions do not expect the supplied flash to get all you want lit up.....it`s basically useless beyond 14 feet,,,and even at that it could be better,,,the reason they are small,,,,is to save battery life...

Here`s a pic of a decent set-up i bought,,,shows the needed grip to hold the flash unit too,,,,makes a nice handle,,,,better support when needed,,,i just leave it in my glove-box in my car,,,,,i`m usually where the cars is,,,,,

Thanks Brian, I have been considering this camera, I already have a flash and bracket from my old Pentax 35mm outfit. (a Vivitar bracket and 285 flash)

Can you get a picture of your camera actually mounted on that flash bracket?
