If so many people are worried with theDx6490'scompression quality, isn't out there someone who modified the firmware, instead of waiting for the official update (if it's ever going to come).

In the recent issue ofOutdoor Photography magazine, the author has a side by side of raw& jpeg and there are little differences in the actual pics. Also, he questioned a few pros and few used raw. I know when to use raw and was only slightly concerned the dx6490 didnt have the mode, but after reading the article, I have no problems with not having this feature.

IF there was a hacked firmware, I would still be interested.

I don't really mind if the pictures are Jpeg or Raw, it's just that you can notice the grains on the images when it's kind of dark.

That`s noise,,,Noise Ninja is a good program to deal with that,,you get this more when the ISO goes up due to dark conditions,,,,even in raw you would still see noise and would have to process it to get rid of it....

Neat Image also does a good job of noise reduction. Too bad the 6490 doesn't employ the same algorithms.

Here is a picture I took this evening. Lots of low-light noise in the sky area.

(no retouching employed)

Here is the sameshot cleaned up with Neat Image. No other processing involved. (other than re-sizing)
