The continuous focus on my dx7440 reverts to single focus when I turn
the screen off with the Display Button or if I turn the screen off via the Menu. Is this normal operation or do I have a problem?

I'm not sure I understand, how do you tell that 'continuous' reverts to 'single' when turning off the screen? The only way I think I could tell on my 7440 would be by looking at the menu to see if it had changed.

In any case, I can't replicate your situation which proves nothing since I may not be doing exactly as you have done.

If you'll post the 'recipe,' I'll try again.

With continuous focusing you can hear the camera focusing as it's moved
around. With single focus you can hear it focus when you press the
shutter button half way down. Thanks for your reply.

Aha! I had never noticed the sound.

In my camera it appears that the continuous focus is disabled whenever the screen is turned off byany means and whenever the screen is turned on by any means, the continuous focus is activated. That is to say, they seem to be tied together. Either both cameras are OK or both are bad.

Thanks for raising the point, I just learned something.

Thanks for checking your camera. Maybe others can confirm our
observation. Like you said maybe they're both defective or that's the
way the camera works. Either way it's not a major problem. Perhaps
Kodak will come up with a firmware fix.

When in continuous focus mode, if you put your ear close to the camera, as you move it, you can hear the motor drive the lens to focus.

In some convoluted way, shutting down the continuous focus when the lcd screen is off makes sense.

If trying to save battery power, twoloads are shed. Using the optical viewer only, there is no need for continuous focus that I can see.

Whether this is of any practical use is another matter - the camera is not a battery hog.
