I recently purchased a Kodak DX 6490 and used it for the first time today.

A was sorely disappointed with the amount of red eye I got, even with the red eye reduction turned on.

How can I prevent this in the future? Any secrets or do I have to purchase an external flash unit?

I'm no expert but from what I hear and from my own experience moving the flash farther from the lens axis will help quite a bit. Saying that, I've got three daughters and in all my photos of the three my middle daughter always has red eye. Even when I had a Sun Pak remote flash, if she looked in the lens I got red eye. Less for sure but still there. When I take her picture now I have her look slightly to the side of the camera and it helps. If that doesn't work always remember you can remove it in Photo Shop. Hope this helps.

As you can see by the picture to the left I always show up Red Eyed.

Yes, redeye is a real problem, from what i've been told it depends on a persons eye color so it won't always be preventable. external flashes help somewhat, but are an added cost. if you are using the easyshare software that came with the camera, it has a pretty slick redeye removal tool in it. alot of the time i run pics of my youngest grandson thru it just for that reason. That is all the editing i use easyshare for though.

Dawg I just figured that was from too much Big Red food:-)And yes I also have a big problem with redeye.I think maybe an external flash would be worth the cost compared to the time of editing them all.

I don't know Dan, my wife claims it's just meanness ooozeing out. I agree on the flash though. It helped out a lot with my daughter eliminating more than half the red eye shots.

Yes an external flash can help here,,sometimes,,,,all cameras have this problem,,so it`s really not a camera fault i think.....

Easyshare does work really well on redeye,,,better than most big-buck programs i`ve found..

I believe it'll be kinda like that Mohawk haircut I got a few years ago, when she said I couldn't get one. She'll get over it.
