I know what you mean about welding, Dawg. I spent 17 years doing that and my eyes are real sensitive to light. It is sometimes hard to pick out details. Course being partially color blind doesn't help either.

In some things I am very color blind and wish others were also, But with photography it does help not to be!! My Dad was color blind also, Bob. We had to tell him whether the traffic light was green or red. Made for interesting trips.
He continually had mishaps and close calls when by himself!!

Likely anyone under 50 is going to wonder, "Why not just pay attention to the top or bottom signal? Top = stop, bottom = go."

For young 'uns wondering that, traffic lights weren't standardized (at least in rural Ohio and Michigan, my experience base) until the late 1950s. Some were horizontal. Some had no yellow (where the sequence was often red / red + green / green / red + green / red).

and not to mention what happens when there is only one blinking light, is it yellow or red ... just stop and be safe

I'm a lic electrician and you can do that job if your color blind, at least not in commercial
