I happened to download complete files of sample photos of the samesubject from Steve's reviews of the Nikon D70 digital slr and of my camera, the Kodak DX7630. With lens from B&H, the Nikon kit is $US 1,060. From B&H, the Kodak DX7630 is $US 299.95.

Can you tell which photo in the excerpt (at 100%) below is from the Nikon and which from the Kodak?

NOTE: in theinterest of fairness, I have to disclose that I selected the JPG output from the Nikon - the Nikon's RAW image is appreciably better...

The color doesn't give it away?

The richer blue of thepost, the warmer castto the brick?

The bottom one is the Kodak, taken at a time later in the day than the Nikon (compare length of shadows under the airconditioners: the sun is higher in the sky). There's a little more detail in the Nikon bricks, window mullions, gray pipes and alarm annunciators (or lights -- at the top, between the telephone pole and the gray pipes).

But, there's actually more shadow detail in the Kodak.

I'd be pretty honked off if I were a Nikon owner seeing these...

Of course, carrying a Kodak point-and-shoot gets no second glance from a wide range of passersby, from tasty chicks to muggers. The first situation is OK with my wife (and the chicks), and the second's just fine by me.

I don't have a DX7630, but I do have a D70 sitting here.

Maybe it's me, but I can always tell a Kodak shot.
If I drop my D70 down into 4mp mode and took a shot with that and the DX7440 of the same thing at the same time, I wonder if you could spot the difference? :-)

Actually, CS, if you've got the time, it would actually help my little project. I'm wondering if my DX7630 is focusing correctly, and a direct comparison like the one you can do could tell me a lot.

You don't, of course, gain anything from this, so feel free to skip this.

And, yes, the RAW image from the Nikon was a sharp as I'd expect a 6 Mp image to be.

Dave

p.s. - the real comparison. (Top) Kodak. (Bottom) Nikon from RAW image. The gray pipes and the A/C contain the whole story.

What sort of test do you want?
Show me the type of picture you want and I'll give it a go.
