if i am in a room or hall with no tripod with room lighting.

the camera focuses (green dot on lcd) with the flash up and ready !

sometimes the pics dont come out very crisp ??

do i need to speed up the shutter ?? ie 1/1000 ??

im still in learning mode so not too many technical answers thanks.

Try using "P" mode,,that way you can drive up the ISO a little to stop camera shake,,,also make sure what you are focusing on has good contrast,,either of these will cause unsharp pics....i`d keep the ISO to 200 or under though,,400 plus ISO causes a pile of noise...
