Ive hadmy new P850 only a few weeks, so still experimenting with it.

One thing that seems to happen alot, is after first turning it on, and a photo is taken, the flash does NOT fire. I've even tried it wilth forced fill flash instead of auto. NO GO!

Its understood that on startup the flash needs to charge up, andit blinks until ready, but this happens even well after that.

I was wondering if anyone else had a similiar issue?

One thing that I thought about, is maybe the popup flash is NOT going up all the way, and has to be manually pushed up for it to 'activate' as on. Because when i push it down even a slight bit it causes the flash not to fire.

At the moment I am considering a warranty exchange....but I'm really not sure if it'sa defect, and plus i dont want to live without it...it's a great camera!

This doesn't sound normal, and you might definately want to consider a replacement or exchange. My P850's flash works fine with no issues such as you mention!

i talked to another 850 user and he said hisdoes the same thing - doesnt fire, only right after turning it on (in auto mode). After the first shot, its all fine.

I spoke with Kodak about it and they advised metoit in for repair. But since repair can take weeks, I am may just waittil after the holidays.

It probably has a switch to tell it when the flash is up. If that switch is defective or missalighned it won't work properly! I wouldn't let the warranty run out before I got it fixed. It probably won't get better on it's own!

I've only had my P850 for a day, but have shot almost 100 pictures to test out the various features. I haven't had any problems with the flash. You may have a defective camera.

Yep, same results. I made sure I was in auto, turned the camera on and as soon as I got the display I shot the picture. Total time from start-up to shot, about 5 seconds. I've repeated this 4 times, each time pushing the flash back down before turning the camera back on. Tried it a fifth time with the flash already up to see if that worked as well. Flash fired all five times.

You may have a defective camera. I'd see if I could get an exchange.

the other user I talked to said he called Kodak and they sent him a link to
re-installthe camerafirmware..

he then"flashed" the firmware in the unit and everything was good from there... camera flash had no problems.

For me, I am sending mine back and getting a PANNY!!

just kidding, but I am sending back for service or exchange.
