Dimage 7i Autofocus ...

Picked up my new 7i on Tuesday and the autofocus seems screwed up. At long focal lengths the autofocus is really twitchy, with the focus indicator switching between red and white like it is having trouble locking onto the subject. It's better at shorter focal lengths, but still feels like it is not quite right.

Anyone with a D7 or D7i have any insights on this?

D7 shooter here. That sounds normal though everyone says the 7i is better than the old model. Keep in mind that at telephoto camera shake is magnified so it's harder for autofocus to track. Hold it very steady or on a tripod and see how much quicker it makes focus. I've done no objective tests but it seems the 122u upgrade helped my camera. Maybe just wishful thinking. <shrug>

try turning off continuous focus
1 camera on
2 menu
3 af mode- change to single
this will also save battery power and quiet the litle beast down.
but if you a shooting action you'll have to constantly hit the button to refocus. depending on the depth of field it may not be an issue. at wide angles the depth of field is greater focus is not as tight. digital cameras still follow the same laws of optics as film cameras. my f5 with a 70-210mm on it will twitch as the apeture is more and more open. the ccd has less depth area to focus in so it attempts to constantly correct. in poor light situations shooting long lenses wide open apetures you shot quite a shots to get 1 or 2 good ones even with faasst AF. the further away the object the better chance it was in focus because the lens hit the infinity mark. but then you had this teeny little thing in this large frame. i tend to shoot wide 28-35 range because of DOF issues. youl see a lot of news people using zooms 20-35 f2.8 28-70 f2.8 easier and faster focus. thats why i like the D7 D7i :D

I have a Dimage 7. I hate the autofocus. It just does not work in real situitations. If you are out and trying to shoot live action, you will loose more shots than you get with the autofocus. I now shoot almost always in manual focus mode. Except for bad distance guesses, I now get good sharp pictures. I usually set to infinity and set aperature priority to 'force' some depth of field. This works. Another advantage is that the camera is faster as it now does not have to wait on autofocus.

I also just uped my firmware to v122, and in addition to getting a visible EVF image in full manual exposure mode, it also seems to focus faster and more accurately.

If you are running v121u, get v122u, it's worth it.
