I am looking for help in selecting the most useful + diopter lens to extend the close focus ability of my 7i. I would like to adda lens that will fill the frame with a smaller item than is possible with the stock camera but not overpower it so there is a gap in the middle. I am concerned that a +10 might leave that gap. I want to photograph coins ranging from 10mm to 35mm diameter. Is anyone working with + diopter lenses? When using them do you put the camera in macro mode or leave it in normal reytaining full zoom range control? Brand recommendations would also be appreciated. Thanks

Doug,
I use a +3 Cokin close up lens (I used this lens to take old photos with my 35mm SLR) You can see example here ( was on D7 , same lens as D7i) http://www.pbase.com/kcan/di7_macro I suspect a stronger diopter will cause distortion at the peripheral , but not sure. The D7 lens is in macro setting. |

The old Canon 48mm lenses work well with a stepping ring. The 240 for C-8 would be a good choice. (Make sure it says C-8. The others aren't quite as good.) Here's some sample shots with the D7:
