I have everything set at factory defaults, and my pictures look horrible, grainy, lack of good color, what is wrong.
My dad just got the Olympus, and out of the box it took great pictures. Did I buy the wrong point and shoot camera, does the Minolta take some time to set? Anyone interested in buying it? |

first thing is a 7i is not really a p/s type camera. but my 7Hi works just fine that way.
have you read the manual that came with it? a sample image is always a good way of demonstrating the issue you are having. example: http://www.pbase.com/image/15906616 in p/s mode macro setting |

it would be better if you sent an original shot out of the camera to me so i can read the EXIF info about how the image was shot.
there are many ways to take a image with this camera that will affect the quality of said image image size- i always shoot at either 2560x1920 or 1600x1200 quality- either RAW, extra fine, or fine(rarely) RAW is the exact image that the imager saw w/o processing. this is the highest quality image you will get. they are also quite large(avg 9MB). they require a special viewer (dimage viewer) to look at and then convert to a more popular viewable file type such as tiff(BIG-but best for printing) or jpeg(varying levels of compression as you go from extrafine down different levels of compression are applied to the file. jpeg is a lossy type of compression and if applied too much it will affect the overall image quality. they will look grainy due to high artifact content due to high compression. now if your using the 16MB card that came with it do yourself a favor and purchase 1 or 2 256MB and above cards you will start to fill them up quickly with that new kid on the block you have there. |

There are a lot of things that can make pics look bad!! What res are you using? What compression, ISO, shutter speed, and on and on.
Try these settings and see what they do for you. 'P' mode for exposure 1600x1200 standard or fine compression ISO 100 locked contrast -1 sharpness to soft color Natural color sat +1 or +2 Use AWB for white balance at first but I prefer daylight if you are going to use flash. If the handshake icon comes up you gotta use the flash, so make sure you use these settings: Fill flash TTL Pre-flash Now you can fiddle from there. |
