Default 7Hi & 5400HS External Flash

I just bought a Minolta 7Hi today. I used to have 9000 and 700si film camera for more than 15 years. I was amazed by the digital camera world about I got the 7Hi. The reason I bought the 7Hi because I thought I could fully utilize the old/existing Minolta accessories from the 9000 & 700si. However, my external flash Program Flash 5400 HS was not applicable for the 7Hi. The flash ready shows on the display but could not fire. The wireless mode displays but could not fire.

I am a little bit upset for Minolta to allow only Program Flash 5600HS to use on 7Hi but not the older model 5400HS.

Can anyone help me on this or where to download the latest firmware so that the 7Hi can read the signal from 5400HS?

There's just no way to make any flash without the "D" to work with the digital Dimages!

The 7/7i/7Hi/A1 require a pre-flash which is only available on newer units such as the HS5600(D) or HS3200(D)... This is no different than Canon with their EX flashes over the EZ models...

There's always the cheaper fully compatible Sigma alternative: EF 500 DG Super

I finally bought the Sigma EF-500 DG Super on Ebay. Everything looks fine except the AF lamp does not work on low night. The manual says it will light for Dimage series. It blinks on wireless but just not on low night when attached to the camera for regular flash.

What does it transpire you?

Even my Minolta's own HS5600 (D) AF illuminator doesn't work on the Dimage in low-light... The digital camera doesn't use this function, only its film cameras with phase detectors will enable the AF lamp!

This might not be the perfect answer but I hope it can provide a little comfort for anyone with the 5400 flash unit and a 7Hi.
I also have those two items and the flash will fire but only if both are in manual mode, and not TTL, Program or A/S Priority mode, respectively.

Like I say, not perfect but it does take you back to the "old days" when you had to know what aperture to use for the distance - but with the advantage of digital that you can, at least, review each effort and retake, unlike film where you wait a week for a few blacked-out photos to be returned !!

There is also the advantage of having a flash with a variable output down to 1/32. I think we're getting too lazy in this digital age..... but I'm not going back!!!

Good luck.
