Default G500 or G400?

Hi all,

I just checked the prices for the G400 and the G500, and they are sold for the same price here in Switzerland.

Which one do you recommend?

I've got the Konica KD-510z (identical to the Minolta G500), and I've been very happy with it.

Steve has reviews of both the G400 and G500 on this site.

From my perspective, the G500 has a flash that's rated as much better. The G500 is also a higher resolution camera with a larger CCD. The G500 uses a 5 megapixel 1/1.8" (.556") CCD. The G400 uses a smaller 4 megapixel 1/2.5" (.4") CCD.

Also, I don't know if the G400 would work for me, since I like to take a lot of indoor photos at family gatherings, parties, etc., and may find the G400 flash strength to be too weak (compared to the stronger flash in the G500).

If you take more outdoor photos, then this may not matter.

You can see some photos from my camera at http://www.pbase.com/jcockfield/konica_kd510z

Hi Jim,

Thanks a lot for your reply! I like your pictures, as long as the camera can do shots like this, I'll be more than happy!

Cheers

A question please JimC, everywhere I visit I read your praise re Konica510 as this and the G500 are both x3 if you wanted x4 min
but not x10 as can't hand hold what would be your suggestion. I take travel pics, old cottages, gardens, buildings, grandchildren, flowers, bees, anything that looks interesting to me at that particular moment, mountains, trains . abt US $500 your thoughts would be appreciated and if any one else has something to add please do. Getting to the stage of thinking it's all too hard. I did read of the "Perfect Camera" :? in one of the newbie forums

If I wanted a 4x Optical Zoom, with a $500.00 budget limit, I'd buy a factory reconditioned Nikon Coolpix 4500. This camera lists for $699, but you can get one for about $369, directly from Nikon now. Here is the link:

Can anyone comment on the flash in a G400?

Especially a comparision with the Canon s400/s410 and/or Minolta Dimage xg/xt would be ideal

thanks..

Flash on the G400 is weak. Fine for a few people up close, but full body shots aren't happening. That said, I LOVE the camera and would take its manual controls and smaller sizeover the G500s 5MP and stronger flash any day.
