Hi- do you have the DiMage viewer software with this model? I thought I was having a similar problem with my S414 but in actuality - when I opened the software (after initializing the USB connection in the camera) I wasnt looking in the right place to see my pics  I have Win98SE also. If you ran the software installation properly- you should be able to find your pics by clicking on the "tree" where My Computer + is( in the DiMage Viewer left sidebar) and it opens up to display more + signs next to drives. Your camera is Drive F -open that and then the DCM folder and you will see your picture files after that. Just open them and -boom- they will load onto the screen !!!

My friend has the same problem on her windows ME Gateway. The computer will not recognize the DiMage 5 camera or the card reader. I installed all software for the two devices as I did on my own computer but for some reason her's won't recognize either. Other USB devices are working. In one instance the computer said to insert the windows me cd so that a missing dll could be loaded but when I inserted the Gateway cd with the os on it Windows could not find the file. (not surprised) I have'nt had a chance to take my non-branded version of win me and try to get the file off of that. kind of strange as I had no problems on my own computer. Windows is wierd sometimes.

Windows 2000 and XP will reconize the reader as removable drives and assign a drive letter to each slot. 98SE and I think ME will need some help.

NO drivers or software should be needed for 2k or XP. I perfer 2k since it doesn't have the additional 'bloat' each new O/S from M$ has and NO product activation and it doesn't have the Fisher Price interface either!

Look for a USB 2 reader (even if you don't have USB 2) with ALL the slots (including XD). The older 6 in 1 readers won't have XD and will handle only USB 1.1, not USB 2!

Mine is internal. Much nicer, no external wires to deal with!! A little harder to setup (needed a 5 1/4" bay adapter).

BTW..........DON'T do a CUT and paste or DELETE the folders or files from the computer. Do it in the camera! Use the COPY and paste function!

Also- Microsoft has an update for USB device connection probs available for 98SE and they will continue to support it (98SE) until 2006- change of policy. The update is in the downloads section in Win98.
