Default How to take IR pictures with my 7i?

Hi, I am new to the forum and am a new ownder of an 7i. I like the camera butthe AF is driving me nuts from time to time.

I have heard that I can use the camera for IR photos but have no idea how to do this. Can't find a thing in the manual. Anyone here know how?

Thanks in advance.

I believe the original D7 was the only camera capable of IR because of the wider colour space. They 'fix' the 7i so it's not as sensitive to IR anymore...

... In case you want to try anyway, you need an R72 (infrared) filter.

I have a 7Hi...if I attach a R72 filter, what kind of results should I expect? Are you saying that the filter won't work with the camera? I'd rather not shell out the $70+ one of these costs just to find it doesn't produce anything useable. Argh.

Since this post, I have done some more reading else where and found what NHL says is correct. Even with a R72 filter, it sounds like this camera won't give a good quality infrared image. So guess I will be looking else where for IR solution. Maybe just continue to use IR films. Thank you.

Those interested in IR- I think there's a Yahoo group on digital IR Photography that posts test photos from various cameras (sorry - I sold my old IR stuff and forgot the location).

I picked up a Minolta S404 for under $300 and a R72 and tooke some really nice photos for a few months before I dumped it all on ebay for next to nothing. You might be able to check that board and find a cheaper camera that will do IR you could pick up as a second.

the 7i will take IR images BUT you will get a central hotspot in the in the image covering about 40% of the image. this is due to the different AF system employed in the 7i vs the 7. all cameras above the 7 (7i, 7Hi, A1, A2) have a different AF system and have the same issue it seems.

It's not caused by the AF system. In the 7i they changed the IR block filter. (All digital cameras have an IR block filter, although some, like the Sony 707/717/828 allow you to move it out of the light path)
They also changed the internal flash so that it emits IR, which allows the camera to control flashes wirelessly (the Minolta Wireless flash system uses IR to communicate with the flashes)
