Default Dimage D7 Lens Failure & Newer Models Question

I had my D7 lens break mechanically (stuck; would not zoom) after 15+ months. Cost $200 to replace. My concern is for next purchase. Does anyone know if A1, A2 lens mechanics are different / more robust? If I cannot be confident of better mechanical design, I would look towards SLR type (Canon, Nikon, upcoming Minolta). But I like the A2 design, 8MP, etc so would consider it (only) if assured it had a more robust lens mechanics. Comments welcome.

I could be wrong but I believe the lens is the same 7x manual zoom.

I believe that are the same also.
Major difference is the propritary battery pack from the 7hi to the A1

Same lens, same external design and I would guess, same internal design.

I had the same thing happen with my D7. Zoom ring broke. I sent it to Minolta for repair and they sent me back a brand new D7i. Cost me $200 for the *repair* mind you.

No complaints here.

By the by, the D7i AF works *much* better than the D7 AF.
Don't like the new sound system though.
