I dropped my Z1 about 2 feet frommy boat seat to thedeck - ouch! It still works but the jolt dislodged the fixed mirror in the eye level view finder. As you know the z1's eye level viewfinder (switchfinder) operates by incorporating a switched mirror which reflects the main LCD screen up to a smaller fixed mirror and then out through an adjustable diopter lens to the eye. My switching mirror works just fine but that little fixed mirror in my Z1 is now floating around in the mechanism. If I shakethe camerajust right the little mirrorwill assume the proper position but won't remain there for longbecause there is now nothing to hold it in place. I tried removing the dark grey plastic viewfinder cover (five little screws hold it in place)but that doesn't allow access to the fixed mirror. Does anyone have any experience with repair of the Z1 and know how I can get to that fixed mirror? Most likely I'll have to send it to Minolta for repair and pay $100+ and wait 3 to 4 weeks for it's return but I thought I try asking this here in the slim chance that someone here had some camera repair experience. I'm still kicking myself for dropping the camera!

:-) Exactly the same thing happened to my Z1. I sent it in and got it repaired pointing out that i had dropped it from a very low level. This happened in July and I had bought the camera in December-03. And I got the camera back with no cost -it was on the warranty! It took 18 days to get it back which I found very reasonable. Theswitch finder is the weak point on this camera I think. I live in Sweden,

Good luck with your camera!

Very interesting that you had the same problem. I've heard of the switching mirror malfunctioning but not the fixed mirror getting dislodged by a small fall. I don't think I'll be as lucky as you in getting mine repaired at no cost. I purchased the camera used in January and think the original owner bought it in October of 2003. I don't think the warrantywas transferable. The Minolta repair center quoted a price of $140 to fix it. OUCH! I sent it off 2 days ago. I really like the camera but in the future I'll have to be extra careful as it seems to be rather fragile!
