I am sorry to ALL !

The problem was, that ACDSEE 5,0 dont work with .NEF .

This software only show thumbails 160*120.

Another software (Nicon Capture) show it in full resolution 2272*1704.

I am sorry to ALL!

hi all I installed this firmware. it works well, apart from this little problem:

- raw files sometimes (about one every 3/4 shots) are placed in other folders rather than in the correct one (independent of the fomder naming setting)

As fare as the raw2nef util, it works well. if you want to use Adobe Camera Raw you must check the compatibility checkbok in the setup panel.

interesting questions...

well i think that you can install another firmware after installing this one. Beware, i am NOT sure about this, I have NOT any proof about it, it is simply a guessing based on how i think the firmware upgrade process should work, and on how i think this hacked firmware has been realized.

and i also thinhk that almost probably if something goes wrong with your camera with this firmware installed, you'll lost your warranty.

So how does the image quality compare? Is it significantly better than "Fine" quality? I'm just wondering how much noise comes from the CCD and how much from the JPEG compression.

Do I dare install this hack... Could someone please try to revert to an official firmware version to see if it is possible? :-)

Thanks!

image quality is definitely better in raw mode rather than in jpeg-fine mode. the main reason in my opinion is not the noise level or jpeg artifacts, but in the very fine work raw converters do in dealing with color balance, saturation, sharpness and so (and of the 12 bits fact obviusly...).

i have always found that images produced by z2 were often too harsh with too high saturation and contrast, with an annoying magenta cast. actually this is due to the internal camera converter.

anyway here is a comparison so you may judge yourself. first one is obtained in jpeg fine mode with auto color balance. second one is obtained in raw mode using Adobe Camera Raw as converter with defaults settings (no custom white balance and so on performed). i publish files in png lossless format. both have bee taken exactely with the same exposure, aperture and camera settings (iso 50).

RAW:

JPEG

look at the too high saturation in the second one, and in the sharpening effect.
