just thought id post up an idea, im sure everyones seen the home made solenoid shutter release systems, well iv just been searching through my electronics bin for a solenoid and an idea hit me, i found a large relay, and whats inside a relay a solenoid , its not a true solenoid but a sprung metal plate that gets pulled towards an electro magnet with considerable force, this then pushes a rod/lever to shift the contacts, idea is to attach a rubber footed extension to the lever, make a mounting bracket that fastens via the tripod mount and that should be it, this can then be triggered by whatever means i want, beam, light, pir, sound, remote ir or even a simple switch, the advantage to this is i have 2 contacts that will switch on and 2 contacts that will switch off when the relay triggers the shutter release.

Interesting thought, Brett. Would your design allow you to pre-focus, though?

i was thinking of toying with a varying voltage, usually with an electro magnet if you apply a lower voltage then the magnetic force isnt as strong, so i was hoping to be able to use a 2 stage switch with a lower voltage thats not able to apply enough force to push the button all the way and the higher voltage to give it the final force to activate the shutter.

I admire anyone who can build stuff like that from the components up. I can build a PC from parts, but I can't make a circuitboard. Kudos to you!
