Good morning folk,

Onthe standard setting I'm having a lot of probs. taking reasonable close up portraits - using the wide ortelephoto settings (I've switched off the digital zoom settings). I always end up with people's noses up front and big. Were I using a traditional SLR I would equate the lens effect with that of awide lens, even on the telephone setting. Not attractive.

Does anyone have any helpful hints, about overcoming this.

Hi Canna

I would have thought the telephoto end of the S5R's range (equ. 105mm) would have been ideal for portraiture!

Just how close-up a portrait did you want?

One of my students borrowed my Finecam S3L (similar lens range etc) and decided to take a hand-held self portrait. He got one of his mates to tell him when the LCD was showing a suitable (?) composition. At least he didn't try the usual "mooning" shots that students seem to love.

I must admit to liking the little bu99er's shot and despite the unusual expression, the fact that he took it at arms length and at an unknown focal length, the schnoz does not seem too Jimmy Durante :-)

I'll leave you to judge.

Cheers, KK

Hi KK,

Many thanks for all your help - incredibly useful.

I will experiment some more. The pic you put up seems absolutely fine in terms of depth of field/portraits.

Please pass on my thanks as well to the handsome lad with the lovely nose.

ABW,

Canna
