One dull and grey afternoon recently (our heat wave seems to be at an end), there wasn't much to do but head for the woods. With hardly any water left in the river, and no real water falls to speak of, I set about trying to capture the motion of the water as it ran over and past the rocks in the river bed. I'm not sure I've got it quite right yet, but I think it's getting there.... I'm particularly pleased with the side-on viewpoint of this first image: I can't recall seeing a river/water fall from this perspective before, I think it works quite well. Unfortunately I had terrible problems with lense flare that was only apparent when I got home, hopefully the worst problems have been cloned out:

For comparison, here's the same falls from a conventional perspective, they look a little pathetic really

A little further up stream these falls took my eye: I can't help but be struck by the similarity between the landscape here in the UK, and in fmoore's Philadelphia shots.
Of course I can't help but think that fmoore's got the better light in his shots though. Ough, jealousy is a terrible thing they say! John. |

Well dull gray days are perfect for this type of subject (there is so much local contrast to deal with). Out of the three I feel that the first one is your strongest compositionally. Textbook rule of thirds here and this is a good example of "When it works, it works". If I were to suggest anything, it would be to burn in the foreground a little. I believe this would help in drawing the viewers eye across the image better and would compliment the flow of the stream.

REally pretty looking country. The crop in the first shot feels a little tight to me but the water effect is done very well.
I do really like the third shot you posted here. Classic shot, great colors. |
