Back in the fall I put together a pano of the Empire State building. This week, I was looking it over at 100% and saw what seem to be 2 simulated 35mm film strips near the mooring hooks under the main antenna. I did an uprez of the area and changed the contrast, but I still can't make out just what it is, except that each is about 5 frames. The one on the right seems to be of people.
Does anybody out there know what/why/when this was put there? ![]() ![]() |

Hi Walter...
I seem to remember at one time, it was intended that airships (dirigibles) would anchor to its "mast" and passengers would disembark. Perhaps, this is the purpose of the structure. Just a guess from "notta nu yawker" ![]() |

Well, I know that the structure was supposed to moor blimps. According to the official ESB website, there was only one blimp that docked there. and for 3 minutes only. When a wind came up the blimp 's tail went way down, dumping the ballast water on people severeal blocks away. There was never another attempt to tie up there.
But I am curious not about the structure...What is that stuff that looks like film strips? |

Hmm... I don't know. But perhaps one of the members of the forum at www.skyscraperpage.com/forum/ would know. (I believe I contacted you once about posting a couple of your ESB shots there)

I posted on CitySkyscrapers, and got the same kind of response. Nobody seems to know what the filmstips are.
I tried posting on the www.esbnyc.com forum on the architecture of the building, but was unable to get my post to "stick." I then noticed that on all of their several forums, the last posting was 12/02. I did look through all of their FAQ and history of the building, with no reference to the filmstrips. |
