Grotto Canyon/Falls, Alberta, Canada

Grotto Canyon/Falls, is found in the Canadian Rockies in Alberta just a quick drive west of Calgary.

I went for a brisk hike on the weekend to a place best visited in the winter as the quickest way in to the Falls is to walk the frozen creek. Once you reach the creek your now into the canyon with rock faces reaching 75 to 100 feet straight above you.

The trail snakes around crossing the ice several times and in other areas the only way to continue is to walk right on the ice. I may have come a month to soon as much of the ice was still wet and soft. One area I stepped onto gave way resulting in getting my feet wet up to my ankles! But I managed to get out of that in a hurry!!

The sound of crunching ice and snow under your feet is loud as it bounces off the rock walls and you can only imagine what it was like to find this place for the first time.

Ice Climbers find this place a haven for their sport of climbing the falls and gives them a chance to enjoy themselves just a 1 hour drive west of Calgary or just 20 minutes east of Canmore, Alberta.

very nice spy. i really like the vertical pano with the ice climber near the top of the frame, thats a very nice image. and the final image is immediately recognizable as your work, lovely cool tones, dark atmosphere, and nice use of selective dodging.

Lot's of potential for nice pix. Like your pix...especially that mountain peak...nice mood there...I used to live in Alberta...great province with a wide variety of picture taking sites.

Terrific series, spy! I like the mood and colors of the pics, especially the ice-climber - love the details from the frozen water.
