I know not many people shooting lighthouses. However, it is irresistible not to take some shots of these lighthouses. Sooner or later, you will become a lighthouse chaser shooting them year after year in order to find the best shooting moment and best angle. Here is the first part of lighthouse shots that I took over the past two years. All of them are on Lake Superior shore.
The following is one of the most photographed, the Bete Grise (aka Mendota) light. It locates at the entrance of the Larc LaBelle on Lake Superior. It is now a privately owned property. ![]() This is the Jacobsville light. It was deactivated and is also a private property. It locates at the entrance of the lower Keweenaw water way. The owner did a great job in providing such a beautiful scene. ![]() This is the Point Iroquois light in Bay Mills, eastern portion of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It was established in 1871 replacing the original one built in 1855, automated in 1962 and deactivated in 1971. ![]() Finally, this is the beautiful Sand Hills light near Ahmeek, Michigan. It was established in 1919 and deactivated in 1954. The current owner, William Frabotta, purchased this station in the 1980s and converted it to a B&B. ![]() Enjoy these beautiful lighthouses on Lake Superior and hope to see other lighthouses in your neighborhood. Very nice pics.
Having grown up in the "UP" of michigan I really enjoyed seeing these. there are alot of fine photographers up there. If you would like to see more pics of the area and get a taste of the UP culture here's a wonderfull web site. http://pasty.com/pcam/ there's alot of good stuff here with a huge gallery. Not really a photography site but great pics. |

Shene,
Like you I recently got very fascinated by lighthouses located in our islands and started photographing them. Surprisingly, there aren't too many considering that we are an island state with lots of dangerous water surrounding the islands. You might be interested in visiting my site which I recently started. Some of the shots need to be re-done with my newer digital camera but I'm saving those moments for another visit to some of the neighbour islands. http://www.pbase.com/selvin/hawaii_lighthouses The picture below shows one of the Hawaii lighthouses located at Kauhola point on the big island of Hawaii near it most northerly point. Enjoy. ![]() |

The DPreview lighthouse thread http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...essage=6251021 has more interesting lighthouses. You might like the Geneva lighthouse posted in that thread. CK http://www.cs.mtu.edu/~shene/DigiCam Nikon Coolpix 950/990/995/2500/4500 User Guide |

Shene,
You are correct, many of the Hawaii lighthouses are not very imposing structures. the Barber's Point and Kauhola lighthouses are less than 100 ft tall. I think the tallest in the islands is less than 150 feet. Loved the link to the lighthouse thread. Thanks much (Mahalo). |

excellent pic's!
I love light houses, and recording them is good, as most are or have been de-commisioned. Who know how long they will be around. Especially a lot of the ones around the great lakes in Canada which were made of wood. |

a pic of the famous hatteras light house from our vacation in sept. The light house recently survived isabel with only some water on the floor and a couple of cracked windows. the rest of hatteras island wasn't so lucky. . . . . anyway here's the pic
