Heres a photograph i took last night at my local beach. It was my first attempt at using slower shutter speeds and i know its not great but i'm happy with it.
Please comment or suggest any ways of improving it. |

I believe it's already on a tripod... judging from the waves
But some moonlight or catchlight would be nice, otherwise try to dial up the contrast/saturation ![]() |

I don't think camera shake is the problem here. The rocks and distant hills are fairly sharp. It is the water that is fuzzy. This is caused by shutter speed being too slow. I like to use slow shutter speeds on streams and waterfalls but have never had very good luck on surf. There is too much random motion and it always turns into a blurred jumble.
I would recommend trying the auto setting on your camera and possibly increasing the ISO by one "notch" to get sharper water. Cal Rasmussen |

![]() But I don't think so since the right most rock formation is really sharp, and the horizon could be due DOF or haze. (otherwise you should invest in a steadier tripod) Also FYI http://www.pbase.com/nhl/p_sunrise_sunset |

I'm trying not to use the auto settings on my new 300d and just shoot in RAW. I see what you mean though Cal,guess the ocean just blends into one with slow shutter speeds. Still if you dont try you will never know though eh.
![]() NHL there was hardly any wind at all and the settings were something like 2.5s f/16 at 50mm ISO100. I've noticed quite a few shots taken with my tripod are'nt as crisp as i would like. You think its worth investing in another then? BTW some real nice beach shots on your pbase. Thanks http://www.pbase.com/mealers/landscapes |
