This is the village of Vathia, almost at the foot of the Mani Peninsular, and only about 3km from Cape Tenaro, which is the southernmost point of the mainland of Europe. Here I have taken a view looking inland, and you can see how the houses merge in with the barren hillside behind so they cannot be seen easily by any approaching invaders. The Mani houses are famous for their stone tower design, built not only to make them easier to defend but also as a sign of status compared to their neighbour. The taller the tower, the richer the family who lived there.

Fascinating place! I bet that would look good printed out on panoramic paper so you could see all the details in those houses.

Nice one,
