Hi there John! Great shot, and good natural - subtle, yet powerful use of colours too! Well done with the overall composition.

Did you take a lot of photos of it, in order to get one that was "the best?")... or did you mean when you explained that it was almost a "throw away shot" ... that looking at it afterwards you realised how well it worked...?

Thanks again for all the comments.

PJ: Yes it was a bit of a throwaway shot. I saw the tree while driving by and thought it might make an interesting feature, but it turned out to be very hard to get a really good viewpoint of it. There was an impressive sunset going on at the time, this one was taken at the same time from the same spot (shown before in another thread):

But I couldn't manage to get the full sunset in the background, so I figured at the time that the tree was going to end up as a moody b&w shot. I took two pictures, one on long zoom, which after reviewing on the LCD I decided had awful composition, so I took another (this one) using a more "rule of thirds" comp. Once on the PC I ran up two edits: one b&w, and one with slightly boosted colours. I couldn't in the end get good contrast on the b&w one, so I posted the colour version.

Oh, and I still like the caption more than the image, so I guess I must have been a headline writer in another life :-)

Regards, John.

No one is a classical picture.
