I checked out both the links, and my opinion is reaffirmed: Italy is a place filled with history and art.

One question: are the beaches all as narrow as the ones I saw at the site for Lido? I don't know why, but I always think of beaches as being deep, requiring quite a lot of walking through sand to reach the water. I haven't been to that many beaches, so I might well have a silly, idealized notion of how they ought to look. :roll:

Well, it depends on the beach : there are a lot of them.
Actually Italy is surrounded by beaches for most of its boundaries
You can find both deep ones and very short ones.
As a general rule of thumb if it is in a place without touristic cities behind it it will be deep, if it is in front of a turistic place it will be narrow.

The second shot with the runner appeals more to me because the runner place the objects in better perspective. Without the runner I can't tell how large the objects are.

Beside kidding, there are a great number of beaches with respect to cliffs along the sea boundaries, especially on the east coast.
