A walled village is a kind of traditional building in ancient China surrounded by defensive stone walls to protect residents from external attacks. Residents are members of extended families or a clan sharing the same surname. Hong Kong also has walled villages and due to urbanisation, they are diminishing in number. Tsang's is one of them and it is located in Shatin of the New Territories.

3 A close-up at one end of the external walls showing a wok-ear structure on the roof, which was only permitted to be built by clans in which there were members whose contribution to society in their timehad been widely recognized by the central government. The two Chinese characters on the wall meanexcellenceand respect. I have no ideas what the fork-like substance is for. Is it for protecting the village from evil spirit or from the strike of lightning?

Please also note the holes on the walls. I think they were for shooting from withinwhen the villagewas under attack.

The passage way of the main entranceleads to the place where the shrines of the ancestors are placed. The three characters on the red wooden plate mean the big house of a high-rank official'. The four characters on the plate below the red one mean signs of good luck and hundreds of thousands of blessings.

Thanks for viewing.
