Agathla Peak, also known as "El Capitan" to the locals, is a volcanic plug that rises about 1500 feet above the desert floor just north of Kayenta, AZ, along the highway toward Monument Valley... 40D, 17-35 @ 21mm, 1/100 @ f/11...

thanks for all the kind words. Bahadir, these volcanic formations are fairly common in this part of the country, though few are as dramatic as Agathla. typically, they form when magma cools and solidifies in the throat of a volcano, and then the volcanic peak itself erodes away over millions of years, leaving just the harder igneous rock of the "plug" behind...
