The b/w is my favourite pic. The point leads my eye from the bottom up to the horizon....the vast unknown. It's quite erie actually (no pun intended), great mood.

both have their merits... the color shot has some very subtle highlights that are quite appealing, while the black & white is much more moody and evocative, and as you mentioned, the more definite horizon looks a bit better (this would also be good with no visible horizon at all, such as on a foggy day). i'm not a huge fan of black & white, but i think i prefer the B&W in this case. there does seem be some banding in the water in the B&W shot, though that may just be due to compression and may not be present in the larger version...

spy and squrrl

thank you so much for your comments. i am glad i was able to convey the erie mood (no pun intended) that i had while viewing this scene. it was just before some rain was moving in, so it really did have a definitively evocative mood. i am happy that came through.

I'd hang both of these on my wall, something about the black and white appeals to me more, I think it's the first rock in the image, with the 4 divots and the "smudge" patch, it's different than all the other rocks... it rings the road less travelled to me.

I vote for the colour one also. I like that blue and brown together.

thank you littlejohn and jeephoto.

i am glad that different people found merits in both photos. i personally have a slight preference for the color version for the the pleasing interaction of the blue and browns.
