Default To Trash or Not to Trash.....

.....that is the question.

I spoke with a lone soul a couple years ago that attended this old church found in Calgary's S.W., after reading an article in the Calgary Herald newspaper. The gentleman was trying very hard to save this piece of history to no avail.

He took on the roll of 'self security', boarding up the windows, kicking out the local riff raff who, from time to time, would take over the church and use it as a crack house for drugs and sex trade. His efforts would go in vain as there appears to be no interest to preserve the site.

In the bushes that surround this church are discarded sleeping bags, broken tree limbs, garbage, beer cans, items of clothing........a dumping ground from the street life. Right now I'm working just 2 minutes from this place so on this early morning, I stopped in to have another look.

More fires have been lit on the other side of the church, scorching it's walls, ....looking through the front door into it's interior, vandals have gone in and spray painted "trasher" on the ceiling.

I hope for the man I spoke with on the phone, that he would some day be able to restore this wonderful monument of his past.....if not,.... find peace within.

Lovely B&W - Kevin!

Here you have cought an almost "divine" sky and clouds that are creating an aura around the steeple.

Best regards,
Walter

What a lovely, but sad story. It will be a real shame if the building cannot be saved. Great shots that do this church and its history justice.

This is inspiring. There is a good concentration of small churches in the nearby village of Ellenville. I'll probably go there one weekend. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks everyone for all those comments.

I went again today as I liked how the clouds looked and I wanted to try something I hadn't done before.

This image is a composite of 20 - 2.5 second shots stacked together to create moving looking clouds. To get the slow shutter, I stacked 15 stops worth of filters to the lens and then burst the shots using a remote cable.

Thanks again everyone.

I Love that last shot, Kevin. It's a shame to tear down buildings because they breed crime. I hope something good comes of this. Your photos are inspiring enough to warrant saving the old church. Just my 2 cents.
