Default Evergreens in Tannersville, NY

This time of year--winter--only the evergreen plants retain their rich green color. All others shed their leaves to become deathly silhouettes of crooked twigs and branches.

Sure enough, when my wife and I went to the hamlet of Tannersville up in the Catskills and took these photos, everything came out black and white except for the evergreens!

Just kidding.

Winter was a tough time for the ancient peoples because what crops they harvested during the summer will have to last through the winter. As such, Winter Solstice—the shortest day of the year—when it arrives signals better days ahead if only because the day starts getting longer. To celebrate, they decorated their homes with wreaths made of evergreens accented by the holly’s red berries and hold a feast. Evergreens were chosen because they are a breed of plants that keep their green color all year-round and so must possess powers that are nothing less than magical.

Well, I applied a massive dose of magic in these photos in the form of Topaz and Photoshop to emphasize the point. Come wintertime, you will see only green in my neck of the woods.

#1,#3 and #4 are my favourites

#1 has to be my overall choice thou, the detail of the stone and the frost in the right-hand tree make the picture.
