if i were to measure it for you guys, it would be something like

the opening 20' high by 4' wide, thats just the little opening. It was indeed a big damn tree, i was on a hill when i took that picture thats why it looks like its scaling down.



and yes it was still alive amazingly, no clue how but it was definitely starting to bloom

It is not uncommon to see trees missing significant amounts from the center thriving for many many years.
True. The centre of a tree (the heartwood) is dead wood. Its only job is to provide the tree with support. The part which keeps the tree alive is just below the bark.
I posted this on a bonsai forum and someone from South Africa said this is very common with trees of golf courses there. They fill the holes with concrete.

Perhaps a followup shot is in order...

You could stuff as many folks as possible inside the tree
and sitting on the limbs.

i will be going back down to Philadelphia next upcoming weekend, i will then take some more shots of that tree, hopefuly it will be nice out and not rainy :-\
