This is a pic of my father-in-law. He didn't know I was taking it. It's my first up-close picture. Any critiques are welcome. Thanks.

Great portrait. You may sharpen it a bit and clone the black mass on the right:

Thanks Ordo. I'm not that great with the editing side of things. Still just trying to learn my camera. Kind of intimidating putting photos on here with all of the great photographers that belong to this forum!

You're starting well even tho b&w is not my forte. The cloning suggestion is a good one. Pick that up right away. Sometimes you just cannot get the right angle. A little tidy-up isn't cheating. |

I don't have elements. I have Gimp and I really don't know how to do use it very well. Sorry to be a little ignorant but what is cloning? I am anxious to learn and to get better at taking pics. I am really liking photography and already wish I had the money to spend on better glass. Thanks for everyone's help.

Cloning means to get rid of undesirable elements of your pick (trees, ropes, cables, persons, dogs, mountains, UFOs, etc.). It's not new to photography, but its much, much easier in the digital era. Gimp must have a clone tool, but i dont use it and can't help you there.
The most important thing is not editing, really, but shooting a good pick, like you certainly did. |

Wolverine, is it me, or does you father-in-law look a lot like an older Jim Belushi.
