I tried on some of the rougher grades, but i eventually got frustrated and just wanted it to work. Also, the battery isn't susceptible to wind etc!

Batteries work best. (also useful if you are backpacking and want to start a fire for the night)!

you might be able to use a lighter, but i've found that the 9v works really well, especially because it'll work no matter what the weather is!
