I just posted a portrait of my son. However, in "cutting and pasting" this photograph into the post, it turned out HUGE -- and much blurrier than the 5 x 7 print I made. Do need to resize my photographs before posting in this forum? If so, what size is appropriate? Am I better off merely appending the photographs as an attachment, rather than pasting them into the body of the post? Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Finally, any ideas as to why the colors are so much "cooler" in the post than in the actual file on my computer (or in the print)?

Regarding the dimensions of the pics you post. I wouldn't show pictures larger than 640x480px.

That's enough for the internet.
Plus, remember that some here are online using a dial-up connections. Try keeping your pics below 100kb.
