Default Whale Watching

We recently went whale watching to a location in southern California that has been seeing an unusual amount of Grey Whales. This is a great time to go. On this dark cloudy photographically challenging day and saw six whales in about an hour and a half.

The longest lens you have is a must for photographing whales from shore. Their usually about a half mile out from the point. Sometimes they'll come in really close but you cant count on it. Bring a long lens.
I brought a 70-400mm for the whales and a 50mm for photographing the wife watching the whales in very dark conditions.

Synchronized swimming on a whole other scale.

She couldn't keep her eyes off the horizon scanning for a blowing whale.

Another pod of whales.

One last shot before we left. She couldn't keep her eyes off the horizon.

G'day Mike

Yes - whale watching from on-shore can be excitiing for its novelty, and I'm sure that you'll graduate someday to on-the-boat whale watching, and as you well know, it opens up heaps more possibilities

And -yes- it's also where our long lenses come into their own
