Default Granddaughter and new camera.

I was lucky enough to be able to spend the day with my granddaughter and my new camera.

I enjoyed both.

Thanks Simon. I just went FF. Sony a850.

I was ready to upgrade to the a77 but I got a deal too good to pass on.

Thank you very much Jim.

It's funny the way things played out. I have been looking forward to the new a77 for a such a long time even pre-ordering one.

Then Henry's camera in Canada had a great deal on the a850 and I couldn't resist a FF camera for the price. So there went the a77 fund.

It's really a basic FF camera. No bells and whistles.

Speaking of bells and whistles, it got me thinking about the new EVF on the SLTs. With all the additional electronics these new SLTs have about twice as many things that can go wrong as a conventional DSLR. Just something to think about.

Well, the a77 is still on my wish list. It's just going to have to wait for a while now. In the meantime I'm sure my a700 & a850 will cover all my needs except video.

I remember you posting a link to the sale they had going. That was a very sweet deal if you got one at that price.

The larger sensor in the A850 also places less demands on the lens quality needed for best results, as the denser APS-C sensor in the A77 is going to require a lens with pretty good resolving power to get the best out of it.

I had a chance to use an A850 for a while, and I was pretty impressed with how well some of my lenses worked on it, especially lenses like my like my Tamron SP 20-40mm f/2.7-3.5 and Tamron SP 35-105mm f/2.8. It was nice to have a 35-105mm that worked like one would on a 35mm camera, as the wide end is a bit too long on an APS-C size sensor for many conditions. ;-)

I did notice that the AF system didn't seem to perform quite as fast as my A700 for some reason. But, that may have just been me not being used to it, or a problem with the firmware that's been corrected now. Sony came out with a firmware update in December 2010 that improves Autofocus speed, and it wasn't available at the time I was using one. From what I remember seeing A850 and A900 owners mention about the update, it can make a big difference in AF speed. So, I'd probably install it if you haven't already done so. Select an Operating System and you'll see a firmware choice you can expand that has Firmware Version 2.0.

Beautiful shot. Seems like my granddaughters were that age just yesterday, but, alas, it's been much longer ago.
