While visiting some of my wife's relatives recently, one of our nieces showed us a picture of my wife's father and his two aunts taken in about 1917. I wanted to borrow the picture and take it home and scan it, but our niece wouldn't part with it. I had my Canon RebelXt with a 50mm f1.8 lens and attempted to photograph it. Our niece wouldn't let us remove the picture from the frame (she had it professionally framed a couple of years ago), so I cleaned the glass and shot it in the frame. Shot in RAW at ISO 800 (no tripod so I wanted as fast a shutter as possible). Although the original is a hand painted color, the B&W sepia turned out much better. Here's the result.

Thanks for looking.

George

Just for comparison, here is the colorized version.

I love these old shots, this photo is around the same time as my grandmothers. Always the children seemed to look somber (the little boy looks unhappy about the photo, probably the clothes they had to wear). I have been restoring all my old black and whites and coloring some so I hope you don't mind but I colored thisone so you could see the effect, this is a very quick job so it could be better but gives an Idea.
