I've just ordered the camera but the salesman told me there are some cards that won't work with the camera and of course he wanted to sell me the more expensive one. I need a card at 256MB or a bit bigger if its not to pricey. Can someone help explain the differences in the cards and make suggestions about where I should order it.

IE. if you can afford the higher priced one they are guaranteed to work, whereas you have to "screen" the cheaper one yourself... They basically all come from a very few asians manufacturers.

I just got my D7i and was also debating on the right CF card. I did some reasearch and the Ritec, Ridata and the Transcend perform about the same. I bought the Transcend and it works great. It only takes around 10 seconds to write a Raw file to the card. I think any of the above cards are the best I could find and believe they are the best for the D7i. And believe there is a difference in speed between cards. The card that came with the card took 30 seconds to write the same file. It is also is faster when writing Jpegs to the card. This is helpful when shooting several shots in succession. I believe the compact flash controllers on the above three cards are what make the difference.

FYI

The D7(i) is the limiting factor since at 9.5MB in 10s, that's just 950kB/s for the above Transcend. This is several magnitudes below what a CF card or a microdrive is actually rated @!
