Does Each Camera Require a Different Type of Memory Card?

I was wondering if memory cards will cross over and can be used with all brands of cameras, or if certain cameras only work with certain cards?

There are types of memory cards that are used by a wide variety of manufacturers. CF and SD cards fall into this category. Then there are the types that are, for all intents and purposes, proprietary. They are Sony's Memory Stick and the Olympus/Fuji xD Cards.
